Has God ever asked you to do something hard? I mean, really hard…. something that doesn’t make sense? Chances are most of us have not been asked directly to follow a path as painful as the prophet Hosea. In the Christian culture, we talk a great deal about God’s calling in our lives and His leading. But, this is usually in reference to something exciting that makes more money for us and gives us a greater sense of comfort. Does He really call us into things that are so gut-wrenchingly painful and permanent as marrying (and re-marrying) a spouse who is unfaithful and having children with other people? Does God want us to go through such things?

A Woman of Strength

"An excellent wife who can find?

For her worth is far above jewels"

- Proverbs 31:10

 

What does it mean for a woman to be “excellent” by Biblical standards?  Is the ideal a docile, compliant subordinate in desperate need of someone to lead her? There are many Christian caricatures of the ideal woman, often portraying her as a wallflower with no ambition and no opinion of her own. While this picture might be less threatening to those who don’t want to be challenged, it is not grounded in well-balanced Biblical truth. There are cultural challenges to interpreting the Biblical descriptions, for sure, but unpacking the character qualities commended in a passage like Proverbs 31 reveals a woman who is hard-working, self-sacrificing and emotionally secure. This woman is strong.
